What are the Definitions and Types of Solidarity?

Solidarity

Being a form of cooperation solidarity represents a street alternative to competition. Solidarity is achieved by allocating more or less costly resources
Generally solidarity means a union of interest’s purpose or sympathies among members of a group, fellowship of responsibilities and interests. Some definition is to be given below to better understand the solidarity.

Emile Durkheim said that “solidarity is social cohesion based upon the dependence individuals have on each other in more advanced societies”
According to dictionary .com---“solidarity refers to union or fellowship arising from common responsibilities and interests, as between members of a group or between classes, peoples etc”.

Characteristics

  1. It is a social cohesion.
  2.  Individual dependence in advanced societies.
  3. Arising common responsibilities
So from the above definitions my point of view is that solidarity means a feeling of unity between people who have the same interests, goals etc.

Types of Solidarity

Emile Durkheim classified two types of solidarity
  • Mechanical solidarity.
  • Organic solidarity
In the below the description is given------

Mechanical Solidarity

According to Ritzer “The more primitive type, characterized by mechanical solidarity has a relatively undifferentiated social structure with little or no division of labor.”
According to Fletcher “A society characterized by mechanical solidarity is unified because all people are generalists. The bond among people is that they are all engage in similar activities and have similar responsibilities.”

Characteristics

  1. Minimum division of labor.
  2. Collective consciousness.
  3. Lack of difference.
  4. High homogeneity and unity.
  5. Unique personality

Organic Solidarity

According to Ritzer “A society characterized by organic solidarity is held together by the differences among people, by the fact that they have different tasks and responsibilities”.
Emile Durkheim said that “In organic solidarity labor is more divided and on the other hand the activity of each is as much more personal as it is more specialized”

Characteristics

  1. High division of labor.
  2. Human relationship like human organ.
  3. High difference and heterogeneity.
