Essential Elements in Education for Citizenship

To understand citizenship training as an important aim of education, we must know the qualities and abilities that education should develop in learners. Some important elements are given below:

1. General Knowledge of Personal and Social Problems: Human life, whether personal or social, faces many kinds of problems. These may be economic, political, moral, spiritual, physical, or mental. Education should give students a general understanding of these problems so that they can face them without too much difficulty. In democratic countries, general knowledge is very important because every citizen is expected to contribute of the nation's progress across different fields.

2. Socialization: Socialization is necessary for developing the qualities of a responsible citizen. Without socialization, a person cannot properly perform the duties of citizenship. After the home, the school, college, or university plays an important role in socialization. These institutions can organize various activities to develop qualities such as cooperation, friendship, social service, sacrifice, and sympathy. Such qualities prepare a person to play the role of a good citizen.

3. Total Development: Every democratic nation needs ideal citizens, and this is possible only when people are fully developed. Therefore, education should aim at the all-round development of the child. It should help in physical, mental, moral, and spiritual growth. Only then can citizens truly serve their nation and contribute honestly to its economic and spiritual progress.

4. Fulfillment of Political Responsibility: A good citizen is one who sincerely performs political duties along with social responsibilities. For example, during elections, every adult man and woman should vote for the best candidate so that the country can have capable leaders. Citizens should know their rights and duties, be ready to protect their rights, and willingly perform their responsibilities. Education should also teach every individual to think independently. As Walker said, education in a democracy does not mean that a person should become a tool of the government. Instead, education should prepare individuals to become leaders themselves and also to choose good leaders.
