Definition and Types of Race

The term race has been first used in the English literature since the 16th century. We have seen various kind of race in various countries. Even in one country we have seen the existence of various races.

Definition of Race

According to A. W. Green “a race is a large biological human grouping with a number of distinctive inherited characteristics which vary within a certain range”.
According to Hicks and Gwynne (cultural anthropology) “the term race sometimes used to identify group of people based on certain physical attributes such as skin color, hair and facial feature.”

Characteristics of Race

1.    Reproduction
2.    Natural selection
3.    Inter group marriage
4.    Physical change

Types of Race

  1. Negroes: Negroes are black skin protecting jaws, broad nose and curly hair.
  2. Mongoloid: mainly Asians are called mongoloid. They have light skin, prominent cheek bones, olive-shaved, eyes and straight black hair. 
  3. Caucasiod : Europeans are familiar of caucasiod. They have white skin, curly hair body covered with hair and high nose.
  4. Australoid: Australians are called australoid. They are white skin, tall figure and brown hair.
